What to Look for Along Your Path Toward Your Destination

We have to stop focusing on what is going on in our lives right now.  All the many problems, crisis, what we need, what we don't have, obstacles, etc.  The point is, just because you don't have all the pieces to make your dream come true, doesn't mean that you won't discover all the tools you need as you travel down your path.

In other words, don't let your condition today, stop you from what you can gain tomorrow.

If you really want something, go ahead, embark on the journey.  Begin.  You will be surprised what you will find as you are walking down that path.

One time, I remember taking a walk with one of my grandmother's good friends who liked to hike in the wilderness.  I was a young kid of around 10 or 11.  And the old man loved walking the large state parks that surrounded our area, but he was getting to old to be wandering around alone.  I thought I was doing this old man a favor, when in fact he was doing me the favor.  He was teaching me how life worked . . . simply by walking with me.

He had decided that we would walk the path on Wild Cat Canyon.  The area was named well, for there were sightings every now and then of big wildcats in that area during bad weather events such as drought. As we started our walk and entered the thicker trees, he stopped for a moment finding a long piece of wood about 2 inches thick and as tall as he was.  He told me to keep a look out for a piece of wood about my height.  A few steps further and we found one to fit me.  I remember listening to the birds and the thunk, thunk, thunk that his staff made as he walked.  I soon used my staff to make harmonizing beats . . . thunk, thunk, thunk.  While he quietly talked and we walked, I noticed that he would stop and bend down every now and then and pick up smooth, heavy rocks and put them in his pocket.  Soon we came to a stream and he told me the best way to find streams, to always find pathways along streams when hiking, how to gather water, what to look for in streams for clean water, how to hold and clean water if you don't have fire to sterilize it and many more things about finding water in the wilderness.  We came across some berries that birds were joyfully eating and he told me how to know when these types of berries were good to eat and proceeded to tell me about roots that are also eatable.

As we walked, I realized the lesson I was learning.  We started the path with absolutely nothing that would be helpful along this journey.   Identification cards, money, and communication devices are not helpful in the middle of a state park.  What one needs on THIS PATH is . . . . (1) A WALKING STICK, which has many uses.  It can help you walk when you get tired or if you injure yourself during the walk.  You can use it to make noise as you walk to warn animals of your arrival and allow them time to clear a path (thunk, thunk, thunk).  Or, it can be used as a defense mechanism in case you meet up with an aggressive beast (non-human or human).  (2) STONES, another defense mechanism but this one can be used as a long-range defense system.  If we had met up with an actual wildcat or other aggressive creature, a good throw of a stone could save your life.  (3) WATER, if you become lost or injured you will need water, a person can live without food but they can not live without water.  Water is necessary for survival.  (4) FOOD or survival and energy.  Pick the wrong thing to eat and you can poison yourself.

Notice, that we had none of those things at the beginning of our journey, but we found all those things along our journey. This is how life works.  You rarely begin a journey with all the resources you need.  The most efficient journeys use resources along the way.

In essence, being prepared is not the same has having everything you think you need for the journey.  Being prepared is knowing what you need to finish the job.  My friend knew that if we were going to walk safely through Wild Cat Canyon, we would need a walking stick, some heavy stones, water and a source of food (if we were gonna walk longer than a day).  He was prepared, because he knew WHAT TO LOOK FOR ALONG THE PATH.  Most people think you are prepared if you are holding everything you need and will not start the journey unless they have packed everything.  What most people think is what stops us from reaching our goals.

You will find what you need on the path to your destination.  You just have to be aware of what you need before embarking on our journey so you recognize the tool/resource when you see it.  Now that you know the secret . . . begin your journey today!

Help Others and Become Successful

Make others successful and you will automatically become a success!  When you start your business, think about your customer or your client.  When you get a new job, think of your customers and your employer.  Pull yourself outside of your own needs, outside of your head, outside of your world.  The key to this method is: satisfying others to create the best testimonials and recommendations is best advertisement for your business, your talent or your knowledge. More importantly, successful people are surrounded by others that are very successful.  The best way to surround yourself with successful people is to MAKE them successful!

Are you getting the clue?  Good, because I've always wanted to be surrounded by powerful, successful and influential friends and YOU are my best shot!

The best social media network to use ?

Just recently, someone asked me: What is the best social media network to use to market my real estate business?

The answer is simple.  The best social media network to use is the social media network that most of your clients/customers are using . . . easy huh?

But besides this obvious answer, seriously think about your business and your industry.  Which social media network would be the best tool to promote your business?

Let's just say you are in the business of music . . . Soundcloud or any social network that features audio and allows your music to be played easily should be the social network you should focus on.

Let's say your business is real estate, you should look at social media networks that allow you to feature pictures or video of your properties, which would be maybe Pinterest, or Google+ or Instagram.

Are you a consultant?  LinkedIn groups or Facebook pages would be the logical tool to highlight, feature and sell your consulting services to an audience interested in your topic.

But, more importantly then finding the right social media network to amass an audience, when you are beginning your online marketing efforts you should focus on developing your audience on ONE social media network.

Let me explain the logic of my method: when you focus on one network you reduce the changes of being overwhelmed by social media tasks.  Also, you will have a much greater success in developing an engaged audience that will follow you anywhere.  Why is an engaged audience that will follow you so important? Because if you have an engaged and loyal audience you can direct them to other social media networks and accounts you will open in the future.

Let's just say you have worked hard and smart and developed a large audience of 3,000 followers on Twitter.  Great, but you have a real estate business and featuring your business on Pinterest would be much more suitable for your business.  On Pinterest you would be able to feature photos of your latest properties for sale and even feature a video tour or two. Because you developed a loyal following of 3,000 people on Twitter, it would be a simple matter of you opening a Pinterest account, pinning your photos and videos of properties and then going back to Twitter and letting your audience know that they can "view" some of your properties on your new Pinterest account!  Wha-la, an instant Pinterest audience.

But don't be an amateur social media user, the point is not to acquire numbers . . . 5,000 followers, 1,000 connections, 10,000 likes mean nothing! The real key to success on any social media network is the interaction you have with your audience.  Truly, you should focus on acquiring an audience on the social networking platform that you enjoy visiting and using -- because you will be visiting this site often to talk to your "people."  The key to success is to have conversations with your audience.  Responding to comments, questions, concerns are key to developing a loyal audience of potential clients.

So, in summary:

1.  Use the social media network that your potential clients love to use (your audience is there, you just have to let them know that you are there to help them);

2.  Focus on developing an audience on one social media network before venturing onto others when you first start out (focus your efforts);

3.  The point is to be available to your potential clients and easily engage with them no matter what social media platform you use.

 Good luck in your endeavors!

It's okay to ask for help

Okay people, let me tell you this:  Asking for help is not a signal of weakness.  In fact, the opposite is true.  The people that believe that it's perfectly natural for others to help them achieve their dreams are the most successful people.

If we are going to be successful millionaires, we have to get over the our whole "I can do this all by myself" mentality.  Seriously, people do not build empires all by themselves.  An empire has "people" in it . . . large amounts of people.

In fact, pulling people together and asking for help from a large group of people is the key to success.  People who are building companies, or dreams, knows that relying on people to help is a necessary - correction, a fundamental piece to the puzzle.

Successful people do not allow these types of issues to "hold them back" from their goals.

UNSUCCESSFUL PEOPLE ISSUES . . .

Issue #1:  Because I'm asking for help, I'm broadcasting to everyone that I don't have the ability to do this for myself.

Issue #2: If I ask for help, people will laugh at me and reject my pleas and I'll look foolish or stupid.

Issue #3:  Asking for help is a sign that I don't know what I'm doing and I hate to look unprofessional.

Issue #4:  People who help me often don't do it the way that "I" would do it. I just hate for anything connected to me to look half-done and unprofessional.  I'd rather do it myself.

Issue #5:  People are generally incompetent.

Issue #6:  When I ask for help, someone always inadvertently lets me down and I end up doing it myself anyway.

HOW TO WORK WITH PEOPLE . . .

So, how do you get people to jump on the band wagon?
  • Let them in on the dream;
  • Make the dream so appealing that they just have to join in;
  • Let them know they can join in;
  • Ask them to join in;
  • Don't be such a perfectionist, let others do it the way "they" do it - you don't own the rights to "perfection".

If you take the above attitudes to heart, this will ultimately help you create a "tribe", a group of people that share your dream and see themselves as a part of your dream -- your vision.  You know what makes asking for help much easier?  Cultivating people that want to help you achieve that dream.  Having trusted friends, colleagues, and people that you know are competent and talented . . . makes it so much easier to ask for advice, or favors, or work or whatever!

Now, do you know how to make sure people keep being a part of your tribe and sticking their dreams into the success of your dream?  Well you say THANK YOU of course . . . in other works, you pay people for their assistance.  And there are so many ways to pay people back for the help they give you.

There are really FIVE (5) great ways of saying "Thank You" that really work:

1.  Money (paying for talent, knowledge and skill is always the best way to get the best help).

2.  Give people of your "tribe" referrals.  Tell other people who will pay or give favor to your "helper" for their talents, skills and experience.

3.  Acknowledgement (public and private).  For some people, that's all they need.  All they want is someone to recognize their efforts.

4.  Gifts and/or Giftcards and other treats

5.  Help them with future favors (an exchange of talent, skills, experience) so they can realize THEIR dreams as well!

So now you know the fundamentals to building your empire.  When you become emperor of your "dreams come true", don't forget about the little guys who helped you build it, my most powerful and influential friend!

Do people recognize as soon as they meet you?

I'm not sure if you all know the story about my climb to gain powerful and influential friends.  If not, listen up, it's important because it demonstrates the power of THE MIND.  It also solidifies the notion that YOU are the controller of your life and your life experience.  Seriously, if you want to have something, be something or do something . . . you have to CONVINCE yourself that you have it already.  That's it.  That's the secret.

I know about this secret because it happened in MY LIFE.  Yes, I lived it!  So, I can tell you with confidence that this simple truth really works.  In my case, one day I was getting a guest list together for a big event.  My husband and I were going to get all our friends together for an elegant celebration.    I was looking through the list to note if we had some prominent people in it, so I could entice some of the reluctant friends to come to the event (I have a set of friends that just want to sit around the house and watch sports and stuff.  It is often a task to get them to unstick their butts from their couches.) As I was compiling the list and, taking the hint from Santa, checking it twice . . . I realized that my husband and I were the most powerful and influential of all of our friends.

What a sad statement, because my husband and I  (at the time) were broke nobodies.

I looked at the list and realized, that all these people came to US for advice.  All these people came to US for a loan of money when things got tight.  All these people did the same things (usually not much of anything) day in and day out.  All these people never did anything daring or exciting or different.  Basically, if my husband and I were in a pinch financially, legally, employment-wise, spiritually . . . we were basically on our own.  Wow.

Kind of distraught, I went to my husband and said, "Look at this!  We are the most power and influential of our friends.  This is crazy -- this is wrong.  Shouldn't we have people we can go to for advice?  Shouldn't we have people we consider mentors?  Shouldn't we be around people that we at least aspire to be like?"

My husband calmly looked at the list and said:  "Yes.  But here's the thing, if you want powerful and influential friends you have to seek out powerful and influential people.  Those types of people are busy doing cool stuff.  They don't just fall in your lap.  You have to seek them out.  You have to make an effort to be all the things powerful and influential people like.  You have to be interesting, knowledgeable, fun, adventurous, different, approachable, understanding and positive.  You have to be all those things FIRST to attract them.  You have to want powerful and influential friends CONSCIOUSLY."

So, I started conditioning myself.  I started telling myself that I'm interesting.  That I'm unique.  That my life is fun and I do fun stuff and interesting people would LOVE to be around me.  I started looking around for new friends that were doing daring things that I've always wanted to do.  I kept prepping my MIND, saying to myself:  "My life is interesting and fun.  I'm going to meet interesting people and I'm gonna do interesting things that I've always wanted to do and some new things that I haven't thought of yet."

Suddenly, I started recognizing all types of opportunities that came my way.  Invitations to parties and events.  Opportunities to travel.  Opportunities to meet people outside my current circles.  Opportunities to learn new stuff.  I said YES to the majority of them (didn't have enough time to say YES to all of them).

About a year later, I realized I had added a whole new circle of people into my life.  And because of those people, I was doing a lot of things I hadn't before.  I was doing fun things. My life was richer, better and much more interesting!  I was looking forward to weekends.  I was telling old friends that they had give me much more notification of events they planned because I was BOOKED for the next two to three weekends with really cool stuff to do! And really cool people to do it with!

Do you want an more interesting life, with interesting people, doing interesting stuff? Then YOU have to believe that your life is interesting, full of interesting people doing interesting things.  YOU have to believe it before anyone else does!

Don't believe me?  Here is Dave Chappelle describing his first encounter with Kanye West before Kanye was known by anyone.  Dave Chappelle says, when he met Kanye, he "knew" he was a star.

Do people recognize your potential as soon as they meet you like Dave Chappelle did Kanye West?  Maybe it's because you are not convinced yet what type of life you want to lead.  I want a life full of powerful, influential and interesting people -- and I'm in the process of getting that.  Kanye wanted to be a star -- and he got that.  What is your life supposed to look like?

All I know is . . . right now, mostly because of you guys, my life is dope!

Your Environment and Circumstances . . .

The other day, one of my friends asked me if I really believed some of the things I write about.  In particular that one's environment and circumstances are a reflection of one's thoughts.  He went on and on pointing out all the obvious reasons why I should discount this belief that I espouse.

He pointed out that I was born on the lower-economic echelon of Great American economic ladder; that I was African-American and a female in a male dominated world; my education was not the best; I know very few people of influence; I was the statistical fatherless child growing up --  the list went on and on.

Yes, I agreed, all those things are true.  And most people would be angry at all the unfair treatment that a little black girl from the poor side of town, who didn't know her father, received on a regular basis all through her life.  But, I had a whole extended family  of 30+ people who loved and supported me.  My primary education wasn't the best, but I pushed myself through college and hold a degree in a field that I love.  Through hard work and money management skills, I'm no longer in the lower levels of the economic ladder.  And I'm part of a wonderful nuclear family that has a dedicated mommy and daddy and three bright kids. I do the work that I love.  And all through my trials and tribulations I have had wonderful friends, family and fans of my work that keep me motivated and smiling on a daily basis.

Yes, the world can be rough and brutal and I've seen some really messed up stuff and people have done some terrible things to me and near me, but I can still hold on to the principal that your mindset determines the condition of your environment and your circumstances.

Shaking his head, he still could not understand how this could be.  How I could think this way . . . so, I told him a story. That made this very clear to him, I think.

There is an old fairy story about the Sun and Earthly Creatures.

One day, the Sun was listening to some earthly creatures
talking about a very dark place they had found. A place of
deep, dark abyss. A Stygian darkness, of gloom and
forbidding. Each creature told how terrifically horrible and
dark the place had seemed. They went on and on about this
place they had found, describing it in great detail.

Curious, the Sun went and looked for this place. He went to
the exact spot they had described. He searched
EVERYWHERE, but he could not find even a tiny shadowy
spot.

He came back to tell the earth creatures he couldn't find it,
and in fact, he did not believe there was any dark place.

For you see, we only see our reflection - the energy we give
off. Darkness is the absence of light. Evil is merely the
absence of good.

BE THE SUN my friend.

P.S. I failed to point out to my friend one thing on his list that was very, very wrong. I DO know people of influence and power.  YOU!  Stay powerful and influential my friends!

How Do You Make Your Dreams Come True?

How do you do it?  Well, I've been telling you how to do it.  But sometimes, you have to hear it from people that you know, love, trust and admire.  So here it goes.  From three men that have made it big in show business.  Listen to them.  They are telling you the truth.

Jim Carrey
"You Might As Well Take A Chance"

Steve Harvey
"You Have to Jump"

Tyrese
"If you want it, go get it!" (some profanity)

Now, go out there and be the powerful and influential people that I know you can be!

Don't Wait

Believe me, you will never be ready.  There is always one more thing that needs to be done before you are completely ready. This can halt your progress indefinitely.  Instead, trust in yourself and begin NOW.  Make improvements as you go along. But don't give yourself the opportunity to talk yourself out of your progress.

When you do the thing you love to do . . .

When you do the thing you love to do, just because you love doing it . . . .

Amazing things happen.

Don't stop yourself from doing you calling.  Do it just for the joy of it.  Do it just because it brings joy to the people around you.  Do it.  And then, see what happens.
You may be utterly surprised!

Your wisdom

Don't avoid the pain, within the pain is your wisdom. I follow a woman on Facebook who lived a really amazingly painful life.  So many awful things happened to her, some of the worst things that you can imagine.  Homelessness, poverty, child abuse, sexual molestation, death, murder, pain, pain and more pain.  Everything that could go wrong went wrong in her life.  Today, she's an up and coming speaker, author and life coach helping people make the most out of life.  And who better than she to help people become the most and the best that they can be?  Right?  She took her painful experiences and created a great life from it.

Don't regret what you have been through.  Without those experiences, you wouldn't be YOU.

Cross the Line

It's time to be bold and to go for what you've wanted all your life.  Yeah, some people may be unhappy with your decision to "go for it" . . . if it's not detrimental, if it doesn't cause them undue stress, upturn their lives, hurt their hearts or cause them to starve . . . then it's pretty likely you can deal with the consequences of following your dream.

There is always a way.  There is always a way that you have a piece of your dream if not the whole darned pie.  Take that way. That little piece of your dream may lead you to more.

Stay powerful and influential my friend.

Don't Forget the Little People

Happy Mother's Day.  Success is wonderful.  Your dreams are beautiful.  But know what is of value.  People come first.  Making sure that you keep the correct perspective is very, very important.  Good moms are not great housekeepers, they are people that make sure their children are healthy and happy.  If you want to create a business that will make you more available to your family, make sure you have TIME with your family.  If you gain success in your business, make sure that you also have a successful family and social life.  Because after all, what good is success if you don't have anyone to share your success with?

See my blog post for Mother's Day 2013: Know When Someone Loves You!

Try something new

I hate trying new things.  It only cascades into doing even more new things to support the first new thing that I just did.

Before you know it, I'll be doing all kinds of things that are out of my comfort level.  Soon, I'll be surrounded by waters that feel, look and taste very, very foreign.  And then I will get that panicky fearful feeling of "what the heck have I done, how did I get back onto shore?  I'm gonna drown!"

But here is the question we neglect to ask ourselves: "Were you happy with your life the way it was?"  Let's examine this concept further:  Were you happy with your life when things felt familiar and safe?  When you could predict, like clockwork, just what is going to happen next?  Were you happy with the direction of your life?

No?

Then you've gotten into this mess because you want a new vision for your life.  And that new vision for your life, your situation, your success is clearly no where near the safe, predictable things you have mastered.  If it were, you'd have that success, situation or life by now.

How bad do you want to live the life of your dreams?  How bad do you want to just have some different opportunities in life?  Then do that new thing.  You've explored the old, safe stuff thoroughly.  The things you want are no where near the vicinity of the old stuff, right?

Continue on my friend.  Do a "new" things today, right now. Even if it makes you feel like you're drowning.  If you keep moving, you'll soon master treading in unfamiliar waters.

In the comments below, tell me the NEW thing you are doing today.  I'm really interested!

The little things are BIG

Let's pretend. Imagine that you visit the doctor tomorrow and he tells you that you only have three days to live -- 72 hours.  What would you do first?  Who would you visit? Where would you visit?  Who would you talk to and spend time with?  What would you do that you've always wanted to do?  How would you fill those 72 hours?

Would you go to work?  Would you cut someone off on the freeway?  Would you stand in line for 30 minutes at the grocery store? The bank? Would you call someone and argue with them?  Would you spend hours with people who don't like you and you them? Would you go to the gym? Would you watch court shows on TV all day long?  Would you watch sports on TV all day long?

If I had only 72 hours to  live, I would want to be with the people I love the most.  I would want to make sure my affairs are in order.  I would want to make love one last time. I would want to give money to a desperate and needy person.  I would like to fly to Hawaii and watch the sun set on the blue shores of the island.  I would want to have a huge party and invite only people who like to laugh and have fun. I would want to write.  I would want to let every person who has helped me know how much I appreciate them and how much they changed my life.  I would like to know that I changed someone else's life for the better.

Funny, all the things I didn't do today.

Sad but true, the things that mean the most to us--we don't do.  What kind of life is that? A sad life where we don't comprehend that: the little things we do are actually big parts of our lives and they mean the most.

Start doing the little things my friend.  At the end of your life, you'll be much more satisfied.

Pay attention to the little things.  Be powerful and influential my friends.

What's Good for the Soul

What do you love doing the most?  What is the thing that you do that makes you feel REALLY, REALLY good inside?

Do you like to draw?
Do you like to write?
Do you like to make furniture?
Do you love sewing?
Do you love sports?
Do you love fixing things?
Do you love to dance?
Do you like making videos?
Do you love creating exotic looks with make-up?
Do you love cutting hair?
Do you love coding?
Do you love animals?
Do you love working with children?
Do you love rock climbing?

Do you love _____________________________________________(fill in the blank).

Then DO it.  Right now.  Today.  Stop reading this blog and do that thing or make plans to do that thing.  Sure you have obligations that take up a lot of your time . . . family, work, etc. But there are ways you can do the thing that you like doing.  Schedule it into your day, week or month if you have to. Block out some time in your calendar and title it: "Very Important Appointment/Mandatory".

Your mind and soul deserve some type of joy.  Make it a priority to regularly get some.

Just a note:  I'm really curious about the things that make people happy and the many talents that we have.  Please, in the comment section below, let me know what thing gives you JOY.  What thing you would do every day if given a chance.

Stay powerful and influential my friends!

Telecommuting Essentials: When Internet Goes Down - Use Your Smartphone Hotspot

As an avid telecommuter, I recently realized that many of my friends, co-workers and colleagues do not realize the full power of the technology that they wield every day!

I quickly began figuring this out when my business coach's internet access shut down and she couldn't contact her clients.  She went down the street to a FedEx Center to use their computer and let us know that her internet service would be down for a couple of days.  Even more recently, a friend went MIA from Facebook for a week because her internet service was down.

My question to these problems are . . . wait, you both have smart phones?!

It seems that we are walking around clueless of our own power and what we have in our pockets.  Did you know that if you have a smartphone with a data plan, you can create a WiFi Hotspot?  This WiFi hotspot can let you share your phone's data connection with a tablet, a laptop or even a desktop computer.  Which means, if your primary internet connection goes down for any reason, you can use your smartphone as an internet provider instead.  It's called wireless tethering and it's a great tool to know about and use.

If you are even thinking of working from home, you should learn to master this little concept, tool and opportunity.

Okay, before I give you instructions on how to do this.  Be warned:
  • You use much more data at a faster rate on your laptop or tablet, so you really need to be aware of your data usage.  You don't want to go over your allotted data usage limits.  Usually, your service provider will send you a little text or e-mail when you use up a certain amount of data usage, but it's best if you monitor this yourself.  In the Settings Feature of every phone, there is a place where your phone will tell you how much data you used and what is left for the month.  Check this often!
  • DO NOT stream HD Video through your smartphone hotspot!  HD Video eats up data faster than a SUV goes through gasoline. Just don't do it!
  • If you are in a business or have a telecommuting job that requires reliable internet access, you should definitely think about calling your service provider and asking about unlimited data rates. The ability to create a WiFi hotspot could be a job-saver for you. If you are self-employed (own your own business) this extra expense could be written off as a tax deduction (legitimate business expense).  This particular expense is worth it, in my opinion.
Turning on your WiFi Hotspot through your smartphone is different for every device, so my instructions on doing this may be a little different for your particular device.  Google your particular phone and operating system and the term "wi-fi hotspot" to find accurate instructions on how to turn on your WiFi Hotspot.

Turning on your iPhone 5 (OS 7) Hotspot
  • Go to Settings
  • Choose either [Cellular] or [Mobile Data]
  • Select Personal Hotspot
  • Personal Hotspot  (flip ON - Your button indicator should be green)
  • It will give you a password [but you can configure your own]
  • The Hotspot name will be whatever your phone is called
  • Below WiFi Password are instructions on how you can connect to your hotspot using WiFi, Bluetooth or USB cable.

Turning on your Android Hotspot
With an Android, you might have to play around a little because each one is different.  I tried this on a three different friend's android phones and turning on the WiFi Hotspot was different on each one.

  • System Settings
  • under wireless and networks go to "More Settings"
  • Mobile Hotspot [toggle ON]
  • Select: Tethering and/or Portable Hotspot
  • Hit the toggle next to portable WiFi Hotspot to activate
  • Once it's activated, tap on the text to the LEFT of the toggle
  • Takes you to the mobile tethering section
  • Tap on CONFIGURE button in button right
  • Set the name, password and protection type (I recommend WPA2 PSK) of WiFi hotspot.
