Earn Quick Money: Doing Micro-Jobs
I'm always telling people to follow their passion, to do what they love to do . . . even if they can only do it for 15 minutes out of the day. Even if they aren't being compensated for their efforts. What matters, what makes your entire life better is the knowledge that you spent at least some time in your day on something that YOU love doing.
Now I have found a way that you can follow your passion and do what you love to do and get compensated for it! Isn't that wonderful?
Do you know about Micro-Jobs?
Do you realize that many people who are considered "unemployed" today are actually managing financially by working mini- or micro-jobs? The Internet calls them micro-jobs which are one-time/short-term jobs or tasks that may take one hour, one day, one week and payment is usually in cash or by Paypal.
They have a sense of freedom. You set your own schedule, determine your rate, choose the tasks you'd like to work and the people you'd like to meet. And the good part about this is there are dozens upon dozens of websites that allow you to list yourself and your talents for small amounts of money to do the things you love. But, here is the kick, as you develop a following by doing your passion you develop devoted clients. People who are willing to give you more and more money to keep doing what you do.
Believe it or not, there are people making a living (paying rent and buying food) working on online micro-gigs. I have a friend who started doing quick tasks (micro-jobs) for side money and realized (once she did the math) she could make more money and control her schedule if she did her micro-jobbing full time.
What are micro-jobs exactly? These jobs are really short tasks that can be done in a small amount of time, usually under 8 hours. You can do these jobs online, at home, in someone's residence or in a business location. What type of jobs will you find? Here's a list:
- Tagging photos
- Internet searches
- Data Entry
- Audio transcription
- Sorting items into folders for a large seminar
- Take one item from one location to another
- Assembling Ikea furniture
- Mystery shopping
- Write content
- User testing websites
. . . and much more
How do you get paid . . .Usually, these platforms will pay you through direct deposit to your bank account or Paypal. If you don't have a bank account, then you should definitely register for a Paypal account (although Paypal does require a bank account after awhile). Most people don't realize that about 20% of Americans don't have a bank account and this can get in the way of working micro-jobs within the current system. A Micro-Job Worker can get around the absence of a bank account by using Digital Wallets and Prepaid/Debit Card Accounts. I will talk about these types of accounts in a future post (stay tuned, I will connect the post here within this article when it is posted.)
How do people get micro-jobs?
To start working micro-jobs it is very simple . . . NOT EASY, but simple. And each micro-job platform has tweaks and hacks that you must learn to make it more lucrative for you under each system. I intend to outline some of these hacks (advanced tips to make you more successful for each system) on future posts, so stay tuned. Save this post because I will update it with detailed information on how to be successful on each platform. However, the first thing you should do is register!
Go to the list below and start registering to begin. That's your first step to gaining additional money starting today.
The Micro-Job Systems (where to Register):
Fiverr
This is the most popular online marketplace for creative freelancers, they are well known for graphic designers creating logos, digital marketers setting up Facebook business page, writing a post for a blog, recording a 30-second voiceover, taking photos for an Instagram page, etc. There is so much more that you can do. Check it out.
TaskRabbit
The most popular "real world" micro-job site. They have thousands of people registered and it promotes that it "connects you to safe and reliable help in your neighborhood". To register with TaskRabbit you must have a credit card and pay for a background check ($25). You need to do this because you may we working in someone's business office, or putting furniture together in someone's home, carrying important papers from one location to another or help set up a party at a local venue. They have to feel that you are reliable and responsible. To be a tasker, you will need a bank account, a credit card, and a smartphone. Sorry, but those are the requirements.
Fancy Hands
Could you make a great assistant? Do you know how to send professional emails? Can you order things from a store to be delivered to your client's home? Do you know how to cancel subscriptions? Do you know how to find and reserve services like a dog walker? Have you ever disputed credit card charges? Have you ever sent your bosses wife flowers? Do you know how to schedule doctor's appointments? Can you proofread an article? Do you know how to make travel arrangement for a business team? If you know how to do any of these things like this, you could make money as a Fancy Hands worker. The cool part about working for them is it's very flexible and you can work these jobs around family obligations. [Note: They have to sign in through your Facebook or Google account so you have to have one of these to sign up.]
Amazon Mechanical Turk
This list very small (micro) tasks that you can do really quickly. For your efforts, you can make anywhere for .01cent to $3.00. Very simple tasks that have to do with programming, data mining, data processing, data verification, classifying information, etc.
Smart Crowd [added 4/4/19]
They provide mostly data entry and translation/transcription work for big companies such as Google, Porsche, and Microsoft. It is free to sign up, you have to provide personal details to complete your profile and then do several online skill assessments. The only complaint I've hard about this site is that your hourly earnings will be below minimum wage (to increase your hourly wage you have work really fast and amazingly accurately). Also, competition among freelancers is fierce, you can go days without getting an assignment to do. But don't let that intimidate you, you gain more work and better jobs as you successfully complete tasks and projects given.
Upwork
They specialize in freelance work on a more technical level. Some of the tasks are under the categories of Web, Mobile & Software Development, IT Networking, Data Science & Analytics, Design & Creative Jobs, Writing and Translation Jobs and Legal Tasks as well.
Micro-Working Tip:
It's important to note, the success of working micro-jobs is being registered at more than ONE site so that if one site has a slow period (with no work for you), you may be able to find work on another site to fill in the gaps.
(Come Back for Updates)
These are the sites that are rated and listed as the most legitimate sites for work. I am still researching additional ones and will update the post as I find more reputable sites to register and make money with. Stay tuned.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just FYI: Some of my posts contain affiliate links. That simply means that if you buy something through one of my links, you won't pay any additional costs, but "Telecommuting Millionaire?" will get a small referral fee that helps me pay some of my business expenses.

Telecommuting Essentials: When Internet Goes Down - Use Your Smartphone Hotspot
As an avid telecommuter, I recently realized that many of my friends, co-workers and colleagues do not realize the full power of the technology that they wield every day!
I quickly began figuring this out when my business coach's internet access shut down and she couldn't contact her clients. She went down the street to a FedEx Center to use their computer and let us know that her internet service would be down for a couple of days. Even more recently, a friend went MIA from Facebook for a week because her internet service was down.
My question to these problems are . . . wait, you both have smart phones?!
It seems that we are walking around clueless of our own power and what we have in our pockets. Did you know that if you have a smartphone with a data plan, you can create a WiFi Hotspot? This WiFi hotspot can let you share your phone's data connection with a tablet, a laptop or even a desktop computer. Which means, if your primary internet connection goes down for any reason, you can use your smartphone as an internet provider instead. It's called wireless tethering and it's a great tool to know about and use.
If you are even thinking of working from home, you should learn to master this little concept, tool and opportunity.
Okay, before I give you instructions on how to do this. Be warned:
- You use much more data at a faster rate on your laptop or tablet, so you really need to be aware of your data usage. You don't want to go over your allotted data usage limits. Usually, your service provider will send you a little text or e-mail when you use up a certain amount of data usage, but it's best if you monitor this yourself. In the Settings Feature of every phone, there is a place where your phone will tell you how much data you used and what is left for the month. Check this often!
- DO NOT stream HD Video through your smartphone hotspot! HD Video eats up data faster than a SUV goes through gasoline. Just don't do it!
- If you are in a business or have a telecommuting job that requires reliable internet access, you should definitely think about calling your service provider and asking about unlimited data rates. The ability to create a WiFi hotspot could be a job-saver for you. If you are self-employed (own your own business) this extra expense could be written off as a tax deduction (legitimate business expense). This particular expense is worth it, in my opinion.
Turning on your iPhone 5 (OS 7) Hotspot
- Go to Settings
- Choose either [Cellular] or [Mobile Data]
- Select Personal Hotspot
- Personal Hotspot (flip ON - Your button indicator should be green)
- It will give you a password [but you can configure your own]
- The Hotspot name will be whatever your phone is called
- Below WiFi Password are instructions on how you can connect to your hotspot using WiFi, Bluetooth or USB cable.
Turning on your Android Hotspot
With an Android, you might have to play around a little because each one is different. I tried this on a three different friend's android phones and turning on the WiFi Hotspot was different on each one.
- System Settings
- under wireless and networks go to "More Settings"
- Mobile Hotspot [toggle ON]
- Select: Tethering and/or Portable Hotspot
- Hit the toggle next to portable WiFi Hotspot to activate
- Once it's activated, tap on the text to the LEFT of the toggle
- Takes you to the mobile tethering section
- Tap on CONFIGURE button in button right
- Set the name, password and protection type (I recommend WPA2 PSK) of WiFi hotspot.

Tele-jobs: QLess
QLess is a great little company that I predict is going to become huge because they believe that waiting in line sucks! I agree.
What do they do about that? Well they created this little system - a virtual line management system which they call the world's first and only mobile queuing solution. They are totally eliminating the need for waiting in line and waiting rooms.
So what do they do? They create virtual, mobile lines! Customers enter "the line" from the cell phones, and touch screen kiosk or the Web, or they can be added to a line by an administrator (a staff person). This allows the customers to roam freely and do other stuff while they wait their turn. QLess sends them a text or calls shortly before their turn! Cool huh?
Currently, its a very small company (under 100 employees) located in Los Angeles. But the great thing about them is they are growing! And an even better attribute of this company . . . they believe in working for home! Most of their job openings descriptions begin with the words . . . Work From Home or Bring Your Own Computer.
This company is going to blow up, get in from the ground floor on this one folks. You won't be sorry! Check out their open jobs here.
EXTRA INCOME OPPORTUNITY:
Are you finding yourself standing in line throughout the day? Maybe you can convince the owner of the establishment to use QLess! If you can convince the owner to use this system, you can get paid.
They have an affiliate program! Visit the affiliate webpage at: http://www.qless.com/affiliate
The affiliate fee is equal to 10% of gross revenue they collect from a qualified introduction to a new client.
I love this!

Telejobs: NCR
Who is NCR?
Man, NCR is everywhere! The next time you go to the store or do any payment transaction, look closely at the machine being used and you'll probably see NCR.
NCR is a global technology company that is EVERYWHERE. They began in 1884 by John H. Patterson with the name National Cash Register Company (see where NCR comes from)? They were the makers of the first mechanical cash registers. Pretty cool, huh? Anyway, they grew and now they estimate that they make more than 300 million transactions per DAY. And guess what? They have plenty of jobs just waiting to be filled. Not only that, they have plenty of jobs that are jobs you can do from anywhere if you have the knowledge and the skill.
This company is a good, stable company to work for if you are lucky enough to get a position with them. So here's the deal . . .
Go to: NCR Career webpage
In the keyword box put in any of these words: "remote", "virtual" or "anywhere"
You will receive a list of jobs that you can do remotely or from anywhere. Telecommuting jobs!
Happy Hunting and Good Luck!

Telejobs: Kaplan, Inc.
Do you have experience in education? Would you like to work for an educational institution . . . from home? Well, you are in luck my friend.
Kaplan, Inc. is a well-known educational company and has many positions that are virtual/remote.
Kaplan Inc. was the Test Prep king when I was in high school. They had all this classes to prep you for the SATs. Then they began test prep classes for other well-known tests and then they began to offer these classes online. Now, Kaplan offers:
- Online and campus based Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
- Professional education for finance, securities, real estate, insurance certifications.
- And tutoring and academic support for kids.
When you go to their Career Webpage, make sure to highlight "Nationwide" in the STATE selection column or type in "virtual" or "remote" in the Keyword slot. You will receive about a couple of dozen jobs that allow you the freedom to work for a great company, but from your own office! Cool huh?
If you want to view all the companies that I have found that offer telecommuting jobs, you should visit my post: Telecommuting Companies Round-Up.
