One Bad Apple . . . Don't Let Negative Things Dictate Your Life Path

Hey you, don't let one person's negative comment, opinion, observation dictate your life's path.  DON'T DO IT!  

I can warn you about this because I took this very dubious path.  I let one person's negative comment  change the trajectory of my life. It caused me to suspend my writing career.  That one negative comment made me reject my most beloved vocation. My calling.

What I'm saying to you is to be aware of the criticism, the negative comments said on the fly, the opinions that come your way. Be aware of them--even listen to them--but take them with a grain of salt and don't let them get in the way of your work, your joy, your dreams.  In fact, I would strongly suggest that for every negative comment you encounter, be even more aware of positive critiques, comments and opinions you receive at the same time.

Did you hear me?  

I said that during the time you receive negative comments and criticisms--you will usually receive positive and encouraging comments at the very same time. It makes me so angry (though I am infinitely guilty of this as well) when someone gives more credence to the negative comments than the positive comments they receive.  In many situations, we (because I'm including myself in this practice) can have 10 different people giving us 10 positive reviews and instead of happily accepting that we have done an excellent job because we have gotten acknowledgement from the majority of our audience--we focus on that one negative comment or review.  

Why do we do this?  Why would one negative review cancel out 10 good/encouraging opinions?  How horrible are we being to those 10 people that liked/enjoyed our work or creations?  Why would we think those 10 opinions invalid suddenly? Why would we give more weight to the one negative person, the one negative review?  That's crazy!  But we do it all the time. 

Let me explain how this practice has hampered MY life.

During my college years, I won several awards for writing. I gained over $5,000 in scholarships that helped me in afford college.  I was on my way to becoming a published author, which was my next step.   In my Junior year, I decided to take a Creative Writing course on another college campus.  In the Creative Writing course there were 15 students and each session focused on the work of one student.  We were to offer a story, everyone had to read it and then we were discussed the stories; providing constructive criticism, opinions or accolades.

When my turn came I receive many accolades from about 10 of my classmates.  Three had some pretty good constructive criticism that I thought would make my story stronger.  One did not like my story at all but enjoyed my writing style.  But one guy (and I'll never forget him) let me know that he thought I was a poor writer.  He was British.  He was tall.  He was older than most of the class. Please notice how after many years I still remember details about him?  You can ask me what the other people in the class looked like and to save my life  I could never tell you. But I could, to this very day, tell you what this guy looked like, what he sounded like and, unfortunately, what he said.

It didn't matter that 13 other people thought my story was not only good, but valid. That my writing style was very readable--and they told me so.  It did not matter that I got an A in that class.  It did not matter than I had won monetary awards for this very same piece of work.  All that mattered was that this guy said that I could not write and that my creation was a piece of junk in his eyes.

I never took another creative writing class again.  It was an entire decade before I let anyone else see a any piece of fiction I wrote.

Did you see what I did?  I let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch!  I let one negative opinion dictate my life's path.  Who knows what I may have achieved if I hadn't let negativity shut me down.  If I didn't let the doubt that was voiced at me turn into a ball of rejection and fear inside my mind.  Who knows, I might have had a dozen published novels at this time.  I might have made a living writing, instead of simply being content doing it as my side vocation, my hobby of sorts.

When I think how my life could have been considerably different if I would have let the several dozen positive opinions color my world, instead of focusing on the one negative opinion--I just get sick.

We do this over and over to ourselves.  This bad habit that we exercise is so extreme, so pervasive in our society, that we have beauty product commercials seriously examining this psychological issue!  Don't believe me?  Watch this commercial/documentary by Dove Soap. Seriously, it expresses exactly our problems with ourselves.

Learn, my dears, from my cautionary tale.  

Look at the ratio of comments, opinions and criticism with an eye toward truth.  Honor people!  If you have 10 positive opinions/comments, don't let one negative opinion out rank the 10 good ones.  Disregarding those 10 people's opinion is a terrible thing to do.  Those 10 people in my Creative Writing class deserved better consideration from me, deserved to be honored for their energy, their encouragement and their opinion. In essence, I was saying that their opinion did not matter and that was very, very wrong of me and I apologize to those people for my neglect of them.

So, in the future--I beg of you--if you receive 100 good reviews and 3 bad ones . . . don't focus on the bad reviews!  Give energy in the ratio that you receive.  Seriously! If you have 100 reviews and 3 are bad, then you are allowed to spend only 3% of your time feeling bad about those reviews.  Three percent, that is all.  If you have 10 reviews and receive 1 bad one, then you are only allowed to use 10% of your time worried about that review, that's it!  Then move on.  

You are not to shut down.  You are not to stop doing what you love.  You are not ALLOWED to do anything but keep going.

This should apply to all things in life.  I should have been ashamed of myself, disregarding 10 good reviews/opinions/comments like they come lightly or a dime-a-dozen.  Good reviews are very, very hard to get and I should have cherished them much, much more than did back then.

The lesson I learned from this episode of my life is . . . take the bull by the horns!  Live life against all adversity--especially, the doubts in your head.  It's the only way to success.  And YOU are going to be successful, you have to be.  I'm counting on you.  After all, I've always wanted powerful and influential friends!

Why has the handwritten thank you note become rare?  Because in this business word of computers and smartphones, we've lost the art of beautiful handwriting and we don't have enough time to sit down and thoughtfully create a nice and personal sentiment.  So, if you have great handwriting and a flair for writing a personal note, you may have an ability to help someone and make money doing it.

Beautiful Note Writing for the Older Generation

Older people still wait for mail.  That's what one rural mail courier told me one time.  He said it was said to watch older folks waiting at the mail box -- waiting for letters that will never come.  They don't use computers, or pads or have smart phones.  They don't have e-mail.  They still value a written letter that they can hold and read and store for safekeeping.  

Do you have family and friends that have older folks that would like to receive a note or two from their loved one?  You can provide that service for your friends!  I know a teenaged girl with great penmanship who copies jokes and interesting information from e-mail or Facebook from her friends.  Adds a note and sends it to her friends elderly family member once a month.  She charges $10 a month for the service.  She has 10 clients.  She says she's on Facebook following these people anyway, and this way they get to share with friends and family that are not Internet connected.  It's a great little service and everyone seems happy about it.  "I have new grandparents and uncles and aunts out of this," she said, "plus, I make like $100 a month and I could make more if I didn't have school."

But, I don't know how to write thank you notes!

The 7 Secrets of the Prolific Writer

Prolific =  definition 1: the person that writes so much stuff you swear they are writing in their sleep; have a staff 12 robot-typist with speeds of 100 words per minute; and three round-the-clock editors that push them mercilessly.

Prolific =  definition 2: Someone who sat in a sound-proof bubble for 25 years, with nothing but a computer and unlimited disk space and just came out and published all their stuff . . . yesterday.

How in the hell, do these people get all this stuff published, written, and edited?  I'm following writers and bloggers and they just seem to pour out article after article, book after book, blog post after blog post -- endlessly.

Don't these people have lives?

Don't their kids need them for something?

Do their dogs have bladders?

Do their spouses demand sex only once a year?

Does something, anything in life get in their way?

That's what I asked all the time, until I discovered what prolific writers do. Once I fell upon their little secrets, it all became clear and easier.  Okay, I'm lying, not easier but at least I'm not so confused -- how about that?

7 Habits of a Prolific Writer

1.  A Prolific Writer takes their work with them where ever they go.  
Not that I'm calling myself a truly prolific writer -- but, I carry Steno Pads with me everywhere.  I buy steno pads and pens by the case and I have them in every bag and in every car that I use. If a stray idea, or even a full article, pops in my head I stop what I'm doing and write it down.  For those pesky times that I can't stop and write things down -- I also have an app on my iPhone that records voice.  I can't tell you how many audio notes to myself I have on this thing.  I also make it a habit type them up as soon as I'm near a computer.  Remember, you haven't the captured the idea until it's set on paper.

2.  A Prolific Writer lives for writing.
Everything you do, see and think about can be used in a blog post, article or book. The ideas are all around you, just waiting for you to capitalize on them. All you need to do is open your eyes to them, make sure you have pad and pen ready (or, audio device ready) to record your observations.

3.  A Prolific Writer grabs ideas, and doesn't let go. 
If a stray idea comes to you, even while you are writing about another topic, write that stray idea down!  Capture it.  Don't say to yourself, "I'll have to remember that." No. Make that idea permanently yours. Remember, you haven't the captured the idea until it's set on paper. 

4.  A Prolific Writer does not second guess the audience. 
Don't second guess your audience.  How many times have you thought of a great topic to write about than then let Ole Mr. Doubt creep in:  "Nah, no one will want to read about that!" (or)  "My audience doesn't care about this." (or, even)  "This would be probably over their head."  You know what?  That's for your audience to know and you to find out.  Offer your idea to your audience, you never know how they'll receive it.  You might just be pleasantly surprised.

5. A Prolific Writer does not over-think it.
You have an idea or a topic to write about -- don't sit and think about it.  Don't try to plan out what you are going to write about.  Don't dream about it.  Don't meditate on it.  Don't play with it.  Write about it.  Just get the ideas out of your head and down on paper - you can edit it later.  Planning is great sometimes, but we can make things bigger and more complicated than they need to be if we over-think the issue.

6.  A Prolific Writer does not aspire toward perfection.
And I'm tell you to stop looking for perfection.  So many times in working with my fellow writers, I hear excuses like: "Just a little more research on this part." (or)  "The words don't flow on that part, I need to rewrite it." (or, even)  "I think someone else just wrote about this particular topic on their blog yesterday, I've got to make mine better or longer or shorter."  Stop.  Perfection can get in your way of success.  Let go of perfection and just do it.

7.  A Prolific Writer breaks things up into smaller pieces.
You know what looks like prolific writing -- several articles.  True, a long article with exploring several points is pretty impressive.  But seven or eight articles on a topic makes the reader think that the author of said articles really knows the ends-and-outs of the topic, don't you think?  Well, prolific writers have figured this out and tend to create smaller pieces out of a larger body of work.  For instances, I could have easily broken up this blog into seven (7) blog posts, examining the 7 Habits of Prolific Writers more deeply.  I would have given my audience seven articles on writing instead of one.  You would have thought I spent weeks on these articles and I really knew my subject well.  But in fact, all I would have done was taken this post and added examples of authors exercising each of these theories.

Dog-gone it, that's what I should have done.  Guess I'm not a Prolific Writer yet.

Well, I hope you aspiring professional writers and bloggers take this advice and flourish.  You have to succeed, I've always wanted powerful and influential friends  -- and I'm counting on you to become one of those.

Blogging for Dollars: 7 Reasons Why Professional Bloggers are Successful

In the last post about blogging: Blogging for Dollars: Top 7 Places to Look for Blogging Jobs
we talked about the second way one could blog for money.  This post will explore Way 1: Beginning Your Own Blog.

To start your own blog and begin blogging you are in luck because there is a lot of information out there on how to start a blog, maintain it, monetize it, promote it and ultimately make money doing it. Do you realize that blogs with 100,000 or more unique visitors a month earn an average of $75,000 annually?  Eighteen percent of all bloggers in the blogoshere are part-time or full-time professional (earning an income) bloggers.

As we know, success first starts with "success in mind." To be a successful blogger, one has to become mentally prepared to establish success in their life.  Many people start a blog (present company included) and often fail at growing their blog because they don't have the right mind-set at the beginning of their journey.

The ones that do succeed, seem to be able to gleen information from the people that did it right.  They carefully emulate successful people's thought patterns and habits, tweek them to fit their personality and business model, and then make these new habits their own.

After much struggle with creating, writing and maintaining my own blog, I thought I would help you figure out how the professionals of the blogsphere got that way and the very things that they did to make them successful at it.

In my study of professional bloggers, I found 7 things that all successful bloggers do:


1.  Find a topic/subject/cause to love

You don't just love the topic, this is a topic that dominates your life.  You can not get enough of this topic.  You read about it, you think about it, you do it, you talk to your friends about it (until they are sick of you and it), you constantly research it, and you want to learn more and more about it.  A good blogger, will immerse themselves in their beloved topic, so it's very important that this topic is something you will not get tired of exploring 6 months down the line.  You will be wedded to this topic, so make sure you can live with it for better or worse.


2.  Have patience and have a need to share

You can't be stingy with what you learn.  In fact, you must have a driving need to share what you have learned. You're goal should be on the grand scale of sharing.  It should look something like: I want to educate 1,000,000 people on "following their dreams" in the next 6 months!  I want to touch and change the lives of 100 people in the next 30 days. Well, to do that you have to share and educate and be present for your audience.  But that is going to take time, and effort, and openness to others.

3.  Build a large audience for your blog  

You have the topic you love and the patience to share it with everyone you meet.  Cool.  You know what would really be cool?  Getting a lot of people to realize that you love this topic and will talk about this topic -- even before you start your blog.  You know how to do that?  Twitter and Facebook.

Create a Facebook Page about your topic and promote the hell out of it.  Get people active on your page talking about the topic.  Or, create a Twitter Account and only talk about your topic.  Develop a large audience on Twitter that simply love talking about your topic.  What you are essentially doing is gathering people of the same interests, you are developing an "audience."  When you then establish your blog, you will have a ready-made audience that trusts you and your opinion and will want to read your posts on said topic!  Having a large audience through social media can really help you get your blog growing quickly.

What is a large audience?  On Facebook having over 250 likes and Twitter having over 1,000 followers is a good start.  But let's face it the more followers you have on both social media sites the better.  We'll elaborate on techniques for gaining followers on social media sites in another blog post.

4.  Commit to Time 

It takes time to create a successful blog. Go to the calendar right now and put a big X 90 days from today. If you started your blog today -- 90 days is a realistic length of time -- you must commit to working on your blog daily for 90 days to see any gains. What are you committing to? Putting up posts regularly.  Replying to comments.  Designing and configuring features. Generally making your blog better each day.  Most bloggers don't make it past the 3 month mark into their blogging venture.  The successful bloggers commit to working on your blog every day until they reach that X on the 90th day.  By the time they reach that X, they have establish a habit of blogging. Which means they will continue working on their blog daily, gaining the ground to success.

Time commitment is essential to success, did you know that 13% of all bloggers (63% of the top professional bloggers) blog more than 10 hours per week or 1.5 hours per day (90 minutes per day).  Wow, that 90 number seems to keep popping up!  I think it really means something.

So, let's commit to 90 minutes per day for 90 days to gain blogging success!

5.  Commit to Consistency

The more consistent the posts, the more profit bloggers gain.  Did you know that?  You didn't?  Well, here's something else: professional full-time bloggers update their blog at least 3 times per day.  Okay, that's a lot of work and I'm not expecting a new blog writer to be able to update a blog 3 times per day and keep their day job.  But, gradually growing your writing techniques to consistently publish one post per day will make your audience grow and thus your earnings will grow as well.

This is easy to do if you keep your blog posts short (300 to 500 words) but packed full of information. I tend to write long blog posts (this post is an example).  If you are like me and put much blood, sweat and tears in each post -- creating long articles that average 1,000 words or more -- committing to 3 or 4 posts a week at regular/predictable intervals is a good starting point.

Just for reference, The top bloggers (like Mashable, TechCrunch, etc.) post at least every 24 hours.  Also note that 27% of the top bloggers post at least once week.  However, if you want to run with the "big dogs" then you should know, the top 100 bloggers post 20+ post per day.  The top 500 bloggers post 12 posts per day.  So, it's pretty clear -- good quality posts and more of them on a consistent basis is the key to gaining a large, devoted audience.


6.  Your List of Fans/Readers/Followers is Key

Gather contact information, create a list of people that have visited your blog so you can promote to those people again! Your list of contacts, of people who are interested in your topic is your GOLDEN EGG.  Find a way to gather and capture information from your visitors.  Compile and store the list like it is a golden treasure, because it is! That list will be your way to riches.  How do you get this information from readers? Well, many bloggers use free e-books, free e-newsletters, free gifts or contests entries in exchange for names, e-mails and addresses of visitors.

The beautiful thing about these lists you compile is, you can use them over and over again to promote future blog posts, to promote books and other materials you create around your blog.  There are so many advantages to list building, it requires its own blog post to give it its full due.  Don't worry, I'm on it -- look for a blog post on the topic soon.

7.  Promotion, promotion, promotion 

There are so many ways to promote your blog and part of creating and maintaining a blog is promoting it.  There is so much good advice out there on promoting your blog -- seriously, all you need to do is take three or four ideas and consistently do them.  If you are consistent in your promotional efforts (remember 90 minutes each day for 90 days) you will see your blog grow by leaps and bounds.  Currently, social media is a big promotional tool for blogs, 93% of professional bloggers use Twitter and Facebook and have over 1,000 followers on these sites to help promote their blog.

An Extra Tip Because I Like You:

8.  Remain Open to Other Forms of Media

Don't get stuck in the blogosphere.  Be open to using other media and digital formats to deliver your ideas and information.  Look into Google+ Hangouts, Guest Blogging, Podcasts, Online Radio Shows, YouTube.  By adding other formats to deliver your information and educate new audiences you can gain a whole new set of people to add to your blogging audience and grow even bigger.   Don't settle of just blogging, the Internet is big.  Try new things, you might just like it.

Blogging for Dollars: Top 7 Places to Look for a Blogging Job

Can you make money blogging?

Well, in a simple answer YES, of course you can.  People do it every day.  Even I make a little (very little) money blogging here at Telecommuting Millionaire?

The good news is: there are two ways you can make money blogging.  Way Number 1: Begin your own blog and monetize (feature ads and affiliate links) on your blog.   Way Number 2: Find a job writing for an established blog.



Way Number 2:

To find a job writing for established blogs, you should first have some experience blogging.  How do you gain experience blogging?  Volunteer to blog for a charity or organization that you are currently a part of, they always need good content and free help managing a blog.  Once you'd worked on their blog and can show that your work has helped grow their audience a bit, you have viable "experience" that you can show an employer of bloggers.  Or, you can start your own hobby blog, where the goal is develop an audience and show off your writing and promotion skills.  Once you are satisfied with your skills and have something to show "the man" check out these places that list blogging jobs.

Using Phone Conversations to Find Great Article/Blog Post Ideas

Many new bloggers ask me, where I get my ideas for blog posts.  It makes me scratch my head, because I seem to find blog post ideas everywhere.  I'm bombarded with blog post ideas every single day and I can't write them down quickly enough.

For instance, I have a friend that calls me and talks and talks and talks. We could be on the phone for two to three hours at a time. One time we were on the phone eight hours -- man, that's like . . . work!

No, she's not being obnoxious or needy.  And no, our conversations are not solving world hunger or the Middle East Crisis.   But get this, she calls me to flesh out her thoughts. She's starting a business and she really needs someone to throw out ideas and then carefully, thoroughly flesh out the details before taking action.

 I understand, though I don't like to be on the phone that long, I understand.

Yeah, yeah, I hear you say:  That's crazy, that's a huge waste of time.  But really, it's not -- or maybe, I've made sure it's not a waste of time. In my point of view, no conversation is a waste of time -- if you are a writer.

You see, those long conversations I have with my friend cover a wide range of topics. While she is mulling over situations, problems and obstacles. I'm finding solutions, insights and processes that held her and can possibly help all of you, my lovely Telecommuting Millionaire? readers.

As a writer, I've learn to jot all this stuff down. No. Not my friend's problems or details of her life, but the THEMES and IDEAS and SOLUTIONS . . . INSIGHTS and PLANS that we cover within the conversation.

These long talking sessions can be organized into very helpful and insightful pieces that could be published in a blog, or in a magazine article, or an op-ed piece.

So, don't let phone conversations just dissipate into the air. Don't hang up the phone and simply move on to something else. While you are on the phone, jot down ideas and insights that come to you through conversation.  Those ideas could just be your ticket to a more lucrative writing career!

Have you ever lost time?

Okay, I'm working -- plugging along, getting some things crossed off of my TO DO list and I'm feeling accomplished today.

Then I take a break and grab some food. While happily chowing I click on my Stumble Upon button.

Don't know what that is? Well it's an evil little thing. It sits on your tool bar and when you click on it, it just randomly takes you to some of the coolest sites that you would never find yourself in a million years. So getting back to my story -- I click the stupid button.

And I came upon a website that is (for me) like Kryptonite to Superman. I just couldn't fight it. I was caught, trapped . . . and I lost 2 hours playing with the dog-gone thing!

It's called Idea Generator and it's simple really. You press the button and crazy ideas randomly pop up and it's so darn silly . . . and amazingly simple . . . and totally enthralling to me (yeah, I'm a simple minded smoe). Anyway, I took my break at 11:45 and now it's 1:45 . . . I lost 2 hours playing with this thing.

So now, I have to make up for it. So if the next few post if you read about some crazy concepts like: "eco-friendly rural sex toys" or "wicker growing machines" or even, "inexpensive edible appliances," then you know that I continued playing with this crazy web toy and I had to write on one of its generated ideas to justify my lose of productivity.

Pray for me. [Sigh]

The Greatest Tool for the "How-To" Writer

I love writing "how-to" articles. When one of my friends taught me how to use "screen-shoots" on the Mac . . . I was truly in love. Now, I have a new love (well it's a potential love - for reasons I will explain later).

QlipBoard

I'm tempted to just leave it at the above linked word and tell you to "just click it man, just click it." The website demonstrates this tool wonderfully. Basically, using QlipBoard (which is free by the way) you can quickly and easily make mini how-to movies and share them in your blog, myspace, craigslist and everywhere using this wonderful new web-tool!

Seriously, mini presentations with audio, text, pointer, highlighting . . . all in mere minutes.

My goodness, the possibilities boggle the mind. I can't wait to create on-line instruction manuals on how to get a telecommuting job. Or how I successfully sold designer jeans on E-bay or . . . (okay, I digress).

Here is the thing, my blog-site is about money management and and working from home. I usually don't put information about PRODUCTS or WEB TOOLS on my website, but dog-gone it this is just to "kwel" to exclude. QlipBoard is da bomb, man! You've GOT to check it out.

The downside (that's why I said it had potential above)-- you know there always has to be a downside -- QlipBoard doesn't have a tool for the Mac OS system yet. But, I checked out their jobs page and they have a listing for a Mac Developer there, so I’m sure the Mac version will come out very, very soon. Meanwhile, if you only have a Mac, grab a friend’s PC or get a Windows Emulator and try this puppy out!

Site Review: Freelance Writing Jobs

I simply love Freelance Writing Jobs Blog because it combines what I like most. Working from home and freelance writing (my two favorite subjects besides wealth and money). This site has given me much insight in successful freelance writing and I've even gained a contract job or two from her listings. This website is packed full of information for the writer and the blogger -- yes, two variances of the same species; sort of like jaguar and leopard (if you don't understand look it up on wikipedia).

Deborah Ng (the author of the blog) describes the website best:

Freelance Writing Jobs began in May 2005 as a way to help other writers, especially Work at Home Moms, find decent paying jobs.
